How to Create a Serbian Ethnic Design: Pirot Kilim Pattern

What You'll Be Creating

Pirot kilims are made with some of the most beautiful traditional Serbian design motifs. The figures all bear colorful names like Devil’s Knees, Tulip, Turtle, Queen’s Sleeve, Hook, Snail, or Mirrors, but are mostly variants of branched geometric forms made with straight and diagonal lines. The predominant traditional colors are black, red and white, but other primary colors can also make an appearance. 
Here’s how you make one of your own using Adobe Photoshop.
First, grasp the basics. There are five traditional parts to the Pirot kilim—from the outside working inwards, they are the Tassels, the Outer Frame, the Border, theInner Frame, and the Field. The outer and inner frame are usually single-colored, and the border and field are the most ornate and decorated parts of the kilim. 
In the image below, the Tassels are white, the Outer and Inner Frame are both black, the Border has a white background with red and blue decorative motifs, and the Field is the decorated rectangle in the middle, with a red background and black and blue motifs. 

Choose your elements

Kilim layouts are based on various plays between straight and diagonal lines. Choose one of these traditional layouts for your kilim, or mix, match, and modify them to create your own.

Traditional kilim layouts

Choose the motifs you want to use in your kilim. It’s best to choose a few varying sizes and complexities to ensure you can make a balanced and dynamic layout. 
The motifs are mostly highly stylized geometric interpretations of the natural shapes of flowers and animals. All are formed by patching together combinations of rectangles and triangles, and after practicing on the six examples given below you'll be able to easily create your own by following the same principles.

Traditional kilim motifs

Decide on your colorway. Traditionally, the inner and outer frame are both black, the border is white, and the center field is red—anywhere from light crimson to deep cherry red. Blue, yellow and green also often make an appearance. Of course you could always decide to part with tradition and go crazy. 
Here are four colorways pulled from traditional Pirot kilim designs—I've given you a framework of five colors to start from, but you can always add more as you work. You can see that all the colorways share some similarities—black and red almost always make an appearance, followed by shades of white or cream. These three colors are very characteristic for Pirot kilims. 
Other colors, mostly primary tones like blue, yellow and green, usually appear in the details. In spite of using very limited palettes, it's possible to achieve a great deal of variety in kilim design.

Traditional kilim colorways

Most of the motifs are geometrical and have some symmetry, so we’ll make one part and then use the Edit > Transform > RotateReflect, or Flip commands to create them.  Let’s start with the Dining Table, which is fairly simple.
To make the traditional Sofra or Dining Table motif, we'll start with a long vertical rectangle. You can just drag the Rectangular Marquee Tool into the approximate shape, and then fill it with your foreground color by clicking Alt-Delete, or with your background color by clicking Control-Delete
Next, we'll make an equilateral triangle whose hypotenuse is somewhat shorter than our initial long rectangle, and position it as shown in the middle image. Click Control-J to make a new copy of the layer with the triangle, and then clickControl-T to access the Free Transform Tool. When the Free Transform Toolcommands appear, hover your mouse cursor over one of the corners of the Free Transform Tool Bounding Box, and hold Shift and drag inwards to slightly reduce the size of your triangle.

The Dining Table motif - starting steps

We want to stack a total of six progressively smaller triangles to complete one side of our Dining Table motif. As your triangles get smaller, you will want to increase their height slightly, by using the Free Transform Tool to draw out the vertex facing right—the one that isn't touching the hypotenuse. Otherwise as the triangles get smaller, the steps of your Dining Table will grow shallower and shallower.
Once you've got six triangles nested inside each other, merge all the parts of your Dining Table together by going to the Layers Panel, clicking on the Layer thumbnail of the Layer with the long vertical rectangle, and then holding down theShift key and clicking on the Layer thumbnail of the Layer with the smallest triangle. This should select all the layers you used to make the Dining Table. With all the layers selected, click Control-E to merge all the selected layers. 
Once you have a single layer, use the Zoom Tool to come closer to your design and use a Hard Round Brush at a small size setting to soften the angles of your motif and make it look more organic. 
Click Control-J to duplicate your new merged layer, and then go to the top menu and choose Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to create the second half of theDining Table. Align the two halves as necessary using the arrow keys, and merge them together once more.

The Dining Table motif is usually decorated by a few smaller versions of the same motif inlaid into its center in different colors. Instead of copying your original motif and shrinking it down, rather make new motifs with a smaller number of zig-zag steps—four and two, instead of the original six. Optionally at the end you can add a small vertical rectangle in the color of the original motif, to tie the pieces together.
And it's done!! You've made your very first traditional Serbian Pirot kilim design motif!! Now that you've mastered the basic principle, the rest of them will be easy.

The second figure we’ll make is the Frog.
To make the Frog, start with a chubby rectangle using the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Next, make an equilateral triangle whose hypotenuse is somewhat shorter than the width of your base rectangle, and position it as shown in the middle image. 
Then we need two smaller, long and narrow rectangles, angled at 45 degrees. You can either make them upright using the Rectangular Marquee Tool and then use the Free Transform Tool to rotate them into place, or you can just use thePolygonal Lasso Tool to draw them at an angle. There is no need to be overly precise, since original kilim designs gain softness and beauty of form from their imperfections. Slight irregularities will help us simulate a hand-made look.  

The Frog motif - starting steps

Click Control-J to duplicate the layer with the two thin rectangles, and then use Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to create the right side of the Frog. When both sides are merged, add little triangles onto the ends of the Frog's legs, as shown in the middle image. They should be facing outwards, like little arrow heads pointing left and right.

The top part of your Frog is done, so you can use Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical to create the bottom part of the Frog. The Frog is usually decorated by a hexagonal frame which is filled with two colors that meet in a sort of thunderbolt line. I suggest using the Hard Round Brush Tool to draw the hexagonal frame, then creating a layer beneath the frame and painting in the desired colors. And your Frogis done!

Now let’s make an Octopus.
To make the Octopus, start with an upright equilateral triangle. If you're having trouble making a nice-looking triangle, make any sort of triangle you like using the Polygonal Lasso Tool
Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to cut off its bottom portion so you're sure it's straight. Then make a copy of your triangle using Control-J, use Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to flip the copy, and move the copied layer so the top vertices of the two triangles overlap. You now have an equilateral triangle. If you don't like its angle you can use the Free Transform Tool by clicking Control-T and dragging the tip of the triangle to the desired height. 
Next you want to add four very thin horizontal rectangles over your triangle. Space them out evenly: one just above the triangle base, one just under its tip, and two more in the middle. At the end of each 'arm' add another little triangle. These are theOctopus tentacles.

Make sure all your little triangles are on a single layer, and then use the Eraser Tool and the Hard Round Brush Tool to soften them a little before you copy them over to the other side. When they're done, click Control-J to duplicate the layer and use Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to create the tentacles for the right side of the Octopus
Merge everything and soften any remaining hard angles, then make a new copy of the layer and use Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical to complete the Octopusshape.

The Octopus is usually decorated by painting the tips of the little triangles at the ends of its tentacles, as well as adding a diamond-shaped field of color in its center. This field can then be decorated by any small figure—one option is to draw a horizontal letter 'H' in one color, and then add a tiny two-step ziggurat in another color to each side of the 'H'. And now you have an Octopus.

Next we'll make some Eyeglasses.
To make the Eyeglasses, we will use nothing but long, thin rectangles. You can make them using the Rectangular Marquee Tool and approximate the lengths. Stack them as shown in the three figures below.

Add three more layers to both sides of the Eyeglasses, and then merge everything together and soften the sharp corners using the Eraser Tool and the Hard Round Brush Tool. When the lines look natural, use Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical to create the bottom part of the Eyeglasses. Merge everything and we're ready to add some color.

The Eyeglasses are usually decorated by filling in their center, using their outline as a guide. You can fill them with one or more colors. Traditionally Eyeglasses are often accompanied by small flecks that resemble seeds or teardrops—one fleck between the two 'lenses' of the Eyeglasses and three flecks in a triangular formation between two motifs.

Let's make a Turtle.
Shockingly, the Turtle motif actually ever so slightly resembles a turtle, as opposed to all the other traditional Pirot kilim motifs. But it starts at an unlikely place—from two long, thin rectangles. 
The bottom rectangle should be almost three times longer than the top one. Then make an upside-down triangle with a hypotenuse somewhat wider than the small rectangle on top of it. The hypotenuse of the triangle should touch the bottom edge of the top rectangle, and the tip of the triangle should lie just beyond the bottom rectangle, as shown in the middle image below.

The Turtle motif - starting steps

Next we want to add two little antennae at an angle of approximately 45 degrees on each side of the short top rectangle we started out with. In the middle image I've drawn frames to show you how the little rectangles are stacked to form the final shape. At the end of each antenna is a little upside-down triangle with its tip cut off. Merge everything together and soften the sharp corners using the Eraser Tool and the Hard Round Brush Tool

Once we use Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical to create the bottom part of the Turtle, we can start to see the resemblance (sort of). The antennae we made are the turtle's feet, and the central part can be decorated with a nice hexagon that represents the shell. 
I suggest drawing the hexagon with the Hard Round Brush Tool so it has an organic feel, rather than perfectly straight lines. The shell can further be decorated with a smaller variant of the Dining Table motif.

Let's tackle our biggest challenge: the Devil's Knees motif. It got its strange name from the many kinks and twists it forms.
We'll start with three long, thin rectangles of varying lengths—the middle one should be the longest, and the bottom one is the shortest. Next, we will use three progressively smaller triangles to connect the middle and top rectangles, as shown in the middle and right images below.

Make a new triangle facing in the opposite direction and use it to connect the bottom rectangle to the rest of the figure. Then add small rectangles at 45 degree angles as shown in the middle image below, and cap them off with small triangles, as shown in the image on the right.

Once you've softened and rounded the corners on the figure, you can use Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical to complete it. Decorations for the Devil's Knees can be made by drawing large triangles into the top and bottom of the motif, and some smaller triangles into its center, as shown in the image below. 
This is the largest and most complex motif we've made, but as you can see they all use identical simple techniques and very basic shapes that stack together in different ways to produce variety. You are now ready to start playing with rectangles and triangles to make your own kilim motifs.

Let's make some frames for your kilim. 
As we mentioned at the start, each kilim layout traditionally has two frames—one frame that goes around the entire design, and one that separates the thick decorated border from the central field. 
Since both the border and the field carry lots of pretty decorations, the borders are usually made in a single color (often black), to help visually separate the border from the field. The frames can be straight lines, or they can form simple patterns like these:

Kilim frames can also have slightly more elaborate designs, like the two shown below. The design on the right is particularly interesting because it creates the illusion of two interlocking patterns holding on to each other. These borders are slightly more elaborate, but still consist of basic geometric shapes, and are easy to make following the steps below, from top to bottom.

We need some smaller motifs to fill in the gaps between the larger ones we've made. Here is a selection to choose from, and you can also create your own. 
Each of these filler motifs was created by stacking together a few rectangles and triangles, and then smoothing over the sharp corners.

Filler motifs to flesh out your design with

This is it! You've learned about the different parts of the kilim, you've considered different layouts, you've created a bunch of main motifs, smaller filler motifs, and frame designs—now pick your favorite ones and put them together into an awesomePirot kilim
You can either start from the Outer Frame and work your way inward towards theField, or you can first design the Field and then add frames and borders around it. Don't forget that your border and frames don't need to be the same all around—you can make them simple lengthwise and elaborate on the sides, or the opposite. 
Kilim making is all about spontaneous and ever changing design, so the only hard and fast rule is the rule of thumb—if it looks good to you, it's good!

How to Create a Set of Flat Hiking Icons in Affinity Designer

What You'll Be Creating

Summer is a great season to go hiking and get closer to wild nature. Are you ready for it? In this tutorial we’ll be creating a set of trendy flat icons with hiking items in Affinity Designer. We’ll be using various techniques to create shadows and switching between the Personas, applying grungy texture to our icons. Let’s get started!
Let’s create a 600 x 600 px New Document and start forming our first icon. Take theRectangle Tool (M) and create a narrow rectangle, placing it horizontally. (Its size is about 90.5 x 7.6 px, but you can make it larger or smaller, depending on the size of your document. Throughout this tutorial I'll be mentioning sizes just to show the approximate proportions of the objects that we'll be creating.)
Use the Triangle tool to make a triangle shape and place it on top of the rectangle. Select both shapes and Align them Horizontal to the Centre from the upper context toolbar (the area below the Persona selectors).

Create a smaller triangle (about 31.8 x 34.1 px size) inside the first one, forming the entrance of our tent. Add two tiny pegs on both sides of the tent and Align the pegs and the lower tent side Vertical to the Bottom.

Take the Pen Tool (P) and draw several straight lines from the tent to both pegs, depicting a rope.

Let’s make the sides of our tent slightly arched, adding a touch of realism to our flat image. Select the big rectangle and Convert it to Curves in the upper context toolbar. Now we can modify the shape. Take the Node Tool (A), grab the side of the triangle and pull it down a bit, bending the shape.

Now that the base of our tent is ready, let’s color it! But first we need to form the color palette of our document. You can find the palette that we’ll be using in the materials to this tutorial, but if you want to use your own colors, here are some brief instructions on how you can make up your palette in a few clicks.
First of all, make a New blank Document and form several shapes with the desired colors (see the set of rectangles below). Move to the Swatches panel, find the menu icon in the top right corner of the panel and select Create Palette From Document > As Document Palette. 
Now that we have our colors in the Swatches, let’s save our palette so that we can use it in any document. Select Export Palette from the drop-down menu in theSwatches panel, and save it anywhere on your PC.
Return to your hiking icons document and move to the Swatches menu to Import Palette > As Document Palette. Great! Now we can apply the created colors directly from the Swatches panel.

Select the tent base and fill it with the light-beige color by selecting it in theSwatches. Color other parts of our tent accordingly. Apply the darker beige color to the rope by applying it to the Stroke.

Select all the elements of our tent (except the rope) and switch the Stroke color to none, so that we have no black outlines.

Let’s form the base of our icon by making a circle of 150 x 150 px size with theEllipse Tool (M) (hold down the Shift key to make the shape even). Fill it with the green color from our palette.

To make the icon more intricate, let’s add a semi-transparent shadow effect to the tent. First of all, Group (Command-G) all parts of the tent and then duplicate the group (Command-C > Command-V). Select the tent copy, right click andUngroup All.

Keeping the duplicated objects selected, Convert them to Curves and use the Add Operation in your upper Toolbar to merge all the parts into a single shape, thus forming a silhouette of our tent. 
Switch the shape to 50% Opacity, Multiply Blend Mode in the settings of the Layerpanel, to make it dark and semi-transparent. Then add a rectangle, covering the right half of the tent (the color and the opacity of the rectangle doesn’t matter, because we only need it to cover part of the tent).

Now let’s use the Mask Layer to form a shadow. Head to the Layers panel, select the rectangle that we’ve placed above the tent, and drag it above the thumbnail preview of the tent silhouette. You will see that a small blue square appears next to the thumbnail. Release the mouse key, this way combining the two shapes and creating a darkened half of the tent.

Now we’ll add a trendy long shadow effect to the icon base. Make a rectangle with the Rectangle Tool (M) and rotate it by 45 degrees. Convert the shape to Curvesand use the Node Tool (A) to adjust the rectangle, hiding its left part behind the tent, as shown in the screenshot below. You can add more nodes by double-clicking on the side of the shape with the Node Tool (A), and delete the unneeded nodes by selecting them and pressing the Backspace key.

Switch the shadow color to green and set its Opacity to 50%, Multiply Blend Mode. Hide the unneeded part of the shadow inside the icon base, using the Mask Layer, as we did previously.
Let’s add one more detail to our tent to make it look more interesting. Duplicate the tent base twice. Select the upper copy and drag its bottom side up, squashing the shape. Fill the shape beneath it with orange color, making it look like a bright stripe. Select the two copies and use the Subtract Operation to cut off the unneeded parts.

Let’s have a look at our completed icon and move on to the next one.

Start forming the backpack base by making a tall rectangle (about 52.4 x 87 pxsize). Add two more rectangles of smaller size on the top and bottom parts of the base, and Align the shapes to Center.

Select the upper rectangle and make its Corners Rounded by 25% in the upper context toolbar. Extrude the shape up a bit, moving its top part outside the basic rectangle.

Copy the basic rectangle twice and use the Intersect Operation to cut off the unneeded parts. Add more elements (fastenings and pockets), making the shape look more like a tourist's backpack. Let's also make the corners of the basic shape rounded as well, to make the shape smoother.

Add more pockets on both sides of the backpack, and apply the bright colors from the Swatches to enliven the object.

Let’s add a shadow, using another technique this time. Copy the backpack group, ungroup all of its parts and Convert them to Curves. Use the Add Operation to create the backpack silhouette. 
As previously, switch the silhouette to 50% Opacity, Multiply Blend Mode. Finally, keeping the silhouette selected, take the Vector Crop Tool and cut off the left part of the shape. You actually don’t destroy this shape and can always edit it with theVector Crop Tool, as it works the same way as the Mask Layer, making part of the shape invisible.

Copy our previous circle icon base and adjust the backpack to fit it. Finally, add the long shadow and apply blue color to the icon base.

Start by making a compass base from an even circle. Add a small rectangle in the upper central part of the circle, forming a graduation line. Select the created element, hold down the Option (Alt) and Shift keys and drag the shape down, making a copy.

Make a copy of the rectangles and rotate them by 90 degrees, forming more graduation lines. Make a small triangle and place it inside the compass base so that it points to the top. Duplicate the triangle and Flip the copy Vertical from theTransforms menu in the upper Toolbox. Now we have a magnetic compass needle!

Let’s rotate the needle to the side a bit.

And we can start coloring our compass! Select the basic circle shape, duplicate it and fill its Stroke with dark-brown color, setting the Stroke Width to 6 pt, making itsCap and Joint rounded and Aligning the Stroke to Inside. Set the Fill color of the compass base copy to light-beige and color all the rest of the elements.

Create a semi-transparent darkened silhouette of our compass and use the Vector Crop Tool to form a shadow on the right half of the object.

Finally, place our compass on the orange icon base and add a long shadow. You can all make the compass more dimensional by making a gentle shadow between the brown outline of the compass and its beige basic shape by creating a smaller circle with dark-beige Stroke.

First of all, let’s form the base of our mountains. Make a 93 x 73.2 px triangle and then create a smaller one, placing it at the right side and making the shapes overlap and Aligning them to the Bottom
Take the Pen Tool (P) and shape the snowcaps of the mountains. We will cut the unneeded pieces off, so you don’t have to be too precise and can draw outside the triangle base. Duplicate the triangle part of the mountain, and then select the copy and the snowcap and use the Intersect Operation to make the cap fit the top of the mountain.

Now let’s color the mountains and form a simple flat cloud. Start by making an even circle and then add two more circles, varying their sizes.

Place a narrow rectangle at the bottom of the cloud and make its Corners 100% Rounded. Combine the shapes to make them fit each other, and use the Add Operation to merge the shapes. You can select the unneeded nodes on the outline of our new shape with the Node Tool (A) and delete them by pressing Backspaceto make the cloud smoother and more rounded. Fill the cloud with the blue color from our palette.


Add more clouds by making copies and flipping them horizontally, and form a gentle shadow for each mountain. Finally, place the created composition onto the round icon base with a long shadow.

Let’s make the chassis of the car by creating two rectangles—the narrow one (for the bumper) and the larger one—and placing them one on top of the other. Add two smaller rectangles with rounded corners for the wheels. To make it clear, we’re forming the front look of our car.

Add two even circles for the headlights of our car. Copy the big rectangle and place the copy above the original shape to render the driver’s cabin. Select the upper left node with the Node Tool (A) and move it to the right side by pressing the right arrow key several times to make the shape skewed. Repeat the same with the top right node, and add the inner part of the cabin by duplicating the shape and making it a bit smaller.

Let’s add the reflections on the front glass part of the cabin. Form two narrow rectangles and make them skewed by moving all the top nodes to the right. Make the car more detailed by adding two rectangles with rounded corners on the roof of the cabin, thus forming the stylized luggage.

Apply colors to our car and add a few more details—the belt across the luggage and a small rectangle between the headlights for the radiator grill, making the car more realistic.

Form a darkened silhouette of our car and use the Vector Crop Tool to form a subtle shadow.

Finish up with the icon by placing the car on a green icon base and forming a long shadow.

Start forming the fire shape from a circle. Use the Ellipse Tool (M) to make an even shape, Convert it to Curves and drag its top node up with the Node Tool (A), so that the shape resembles an egg. Convert the upper node to Sharp angle from the upper context toolbar.

Duplicate the fire shape and make it smaller, forming the inner part. Move on and start making the wooden logs. Make two small even circles for the front part of the logs. Further, draw out the extruded part of the log with the Pen Tool (P).

Form two more logs on both sides of the fire and make their tips rounded by bending the curves with the Node Tool (A). Apply colors to the created outlines, making a bright campfire symbol.

Take the Pencil Tool (N) and draw a spiral swirled line on the front parts of both logs, making the wood surface more realistic. Form a gentle shadow on the right part of the campfire, either using the Mask Layer or the Vector Crop Tool, as we did earlier. Finally, finish up with the icon by placing it on a blue circle base and adding a long shadow.

Since the beginning of this tutorial we have been working with the Draw Persona, which is great for vector graphics. However, Affinity Designer allows us to combine vector and raster graphics, creating an extraordinary mix of styles. Let’s see how it works!
Find the Persona switchers in the top Toolbox bar and select the Pixel Persona(the central one). Go back to our first icon—the tent—and select the orange stripe. Find the Insert Target function in the Toolbox on top and select Insert Inside the Selection mode. Now everything you draw will be shown only inside the boundaries of the selected shape, as if we were using a Mask Layer.

Take the Paint Brush from the Tool panel and go to the Brushes panel to select the desired brush. Use one of the Texture or Spray-paints brushes to create a grungy, messy effect. Press the Add Pixel Layer icon in the bottom of the Layers panel (otherwise, the Pixel layer will be created automatically), select the darker orange color and make a few strokes, adding stains and making the tent more textured.
Use the same method to draw over the base of the tent, making it look messy as well.
