Movie Stars Chris Pratt And John Krasinski Honor Fallen Navy SEAL On Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a holiday that matters to some more than others, but in reality, it should matter to everyone equally. For those who have lost family members while they served in the military, it’s an important day of remembrance. For others, Memorial Day is treated as an extra day off work filled with barbecue and other fun outdoor activities.

On May 29, 2017, Hollywood stars Chris Pratt and John Krasinski took to social media to honor a fallen Navy SEAL – Lt. Michael Patrick Murphy.

The actors, who were both in the United Kingdom for the holiday weekend, participated in the #MurphChallenge together. This exercise routine was created in honor of Lt. Murphy.

It’s considered one of the hardest workouts ever created.

The routine is as follows:
  • 1-mile run
  • 100 pull-ups
  • 200 push-ups
  • 300 air squats
  • 1 mile run wearing a 20-pound body vest
According to The Murphy Challenge’s website, “The ‘MURPH’ is more than just a workout, it is a tradition that helps push us, humble us, and dedicate a bit of pain and sweat to honor a man who gave everything he had.”
Pratt and Krasinski posted to their Instagram pages after they both completed the workout. The two were drenched in sweat and completely out of breath.
In their videos, they encouraged fans to learn more about Lt. Murphy and the numerous “brave men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country that we think about and honor today, Memorial Day.”

“It’s a day like today when we commemorate those fallen heroes and say thanks for all you do to make our dreams come true,” says Pratt.
Krasinski follows, “So today, whether you do a Murph Challenge or just take some time to say thank you and remember, remember that’s what today is all about.”

Gyms all across the country are participating in this challenge as well. The challenge raises money and awareness for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

Both actors have experience playing a Navy Seals character on the big screen. Pratt played a DEVGRU operator in the Oscar-award winning film Zero Dark Thirty, and Krasinski portrayed a GRS team member in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
While preparing for his role in Zero Dark Thirty, Pratty followed a Navy SEAL training regimen. He climbed through nets, crawled through sand, and got to see what these SEALs experience on a daily basis.

Pratt says, “I barely touched the tip of what these guys have to go through.”

Memorial Day should serve as a reminder for all of us to thank the brave men and women who sacrifice for our freedom and well-being. They are an important reason why we’re able to do what we love. Take the time to say thank you to those who serve. It’s a small gesture that goes a long way!

“Heroes” Of The Portland Stabbing Attack Praised For Bravely Standing Up To Racist Rants

In the wake of the tragic Portland stabbings, one word consistently came up to describe the victims: heroes.
According to KATU, a man, identified as Jeremy Joseph Christian, began verbally insulting two young Muslim women on the MAX light rail system. He shouted what “would best be characterized as hate speech toward a variety of ethnicities and religions,” said Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson. Three men, identified as 23-year-old Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 53-year-old Ricky John Best, and 21-year-old Micah David-Cole Fletcher, came to the defense of the two women and tried to calm the suspect down. As a result, Namkai Meche and Best were stabbed to death, and Fletcher was treated for non-fatal wounds.

These three men are being praised as heroes.

“Two men lost their lives and another was injured for doing the right thing, standing up for people they didn’t know against hatred,” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said in a statement Saturday, according to the Washington Post. “Their actions were brave and selfless, and should serve as an example and inspiration to us all. They are heroes.”
People nationwide are infuriated by what happened, but are praising these three men for their braveness:
(2/3)We are deeply saddened. Our thoughts & prayers are with loved ones of those lost & with person injured.
Here are some details on these three heroes.

Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche

According to a Facebook post from Reed College, Namkai Meche graduated from the school in 2016, where he studied economics. One of his former professors, Kambiz Ghanea Bassiri described him as an intelligent, thoughtful, smart, inquisitive, and compassionate person:
“I still remember where he sat in conference and the types of probing, intelligent questions I could anticipate him asking. He was thoughtful, humble, smart, inquisitive, and compassionate. He was a wonderful human being. As good as they come. And now he is a hero to me.”
Prior to his death, Namkai Meche was an intern at Cadmus Group, a consulting company. His aunt was reportedly on the phone with Namkai Meche right before his death. She told KATU that she heard the “hate speech” over the phone, and told him to video tape it so he could send it to the police. However, she did not intend for him to put his life in danger by coming to the defense of the young girls.

Ricky John Best

Best was a father, Army veteran, and city of Portland employee.

After serving in the Army for 23 years, Best retired in 2012. Best was a technician at Portland’s Bureau of Development services and was on his way home to his family when the attack occurred.
According to the Oregonian, Best’s supervisor described him as the “first person you would go to for help.” His co-workers said that it was “just like Rick to step in and help somebody out.”
The city commissioner released a statement to memorialize Best:
“My heart goes out to the family of Rick Best. They have lost a husband and a father, and we have lost a treasured employee… Rick worked for the city for a little more than two years and was a valued member of our Bureau of Development Services team. And as a veteran, he served our country with honor and distinction. He stood up for two young women and others he didn’t even know — all because he wanted to help… Losing a colleague is hard. Losing someone under these circumstances makes it even worse. We are very saddened at the loss of Rick and we will remember him fondly as we move forward.”

Micah David-Cole Fletcher

Micah Fletcher is the only stabbing victim to survive the attack.

He is a 21-year-old college student at Portland State University, a poet, and a passionate advocate for social justice, according to the Oregonian. Micah has written poetry in the past on prejudice against Muslims:
“When two towering trees of wrought iron and glass and cement are brought down to their knees,
We let it leave an ugly footprint on America that hasn’t disappeared in 12 years.
The knife missed Fletcher’s jugular by “millimeters.” Bone fragments were surgically removed from his neck, but he is expected to make a full recovery. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to cover Fletcher’s medical expenses and at the time of this writing, had raised $230,000 of the $250,000 goal.
According to the Portland Mercury, Christian was a known “known right-wing extremist and white supremacist.” For example, on April 29th, Christian went to a right-wing march for free speech carrying a baseball bat. His intent was to use the baseball bat to attack left-wing protesters. Throughout the day, he yelled racial slurs and “Hail Vinland” and even gave the Nazi salute. Police quickly confiscated the baseball bat.

Christian’s violent intent at the rally was not the first indication of radical views. On April 19th, the anniversary of the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Christian wrote a Facebook post praising bomber Timothy McVeigh.
“May all the Gods Bless Timothy McVeigh a TRUE PATRIOT!!!”
35-year-old Christian was arrested north of Portland by the police following the attack.

The events that transpired on Friday, May 26th, are both a saddening reminder of the prejudice and xenophobia present at home in the United States and an inspiring story of average people doing what was right to help those in need.
