This ‘wavy’ California beach house was built in 1970s, and it will take your breath away

Some people like water, but these homeowners LOVE water. Welcome to the Wave House. Originally built in the 1970s by architect Michael Carmichael, the Wave House is situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara.

The new owners recently made some renovations to restore the home to its magical glory.

There was no obvious remodeling, no work that had been done that we could see,” Carmichael told TODAY. “But the windows leaked, the roof leaked, there was no central heat or air conditioning. Everything was aged.”

Almost everything in this home is wavy. From the shapes of the house itself to the windows, and even some of the furniture has a wavy feel to it.

“There are very few straight lines and no true arches,” Williams says. “Everything is elliptical. Everything is free-form.”

This whimsical dream home includes two bedrooms, a living room, a dining and kitchen area, as well as a bathroom. The new renovations added a new maintain staircase from the front hallway to the second floor.

The new owner had envisioned updating the kitchen with new countertops and cabinets in the home, however, it was intentionally left with a minimalistic look.

“We went back and forth several times and decided that’s where we would side with a purist approach,” Williams says. “It adds that certain level of funk.”The oak slat board finish seamlessly blends the cabinets with the refrigerator and matches the rounded tile design in the countertops.

The tiles on the main floor are simultaneously new and old limestone.

“One out of every 10 tiles will have a seahorse fossil or the fossil of a sea snail embedded in the tile,” Williams says.

The fireplace was left untouched other than a new paint job.

“It was really important to keep that element,” William said.

The master bedroom wasn’t modified too much but they did have to change up the tail of the wave window as it was too high. It was expanded to bring in more sunlight.

The master bathroom was also redone and modernized with onyx countertops and shower walls that also have the appearance of waves.

“We placed the slabs to follow the curves of the glass and reiterate the waves,” Williams explains. Radiant heat keeps the floors warm in all the bathrooms in the house and tower.

A second bedroom and bathroom were also added so that there are a bedroom and bathroom on each floor.

Their deck had sustained significant dry rot, so it was ripped out and a new Brazilian ipe wood was installed in its place. Doors were added to the exterior of the home so that there is access to the first-floor shower/bathroom, the living area, and a bedroom.

Well, the Wave House has one. It was recently renovated to incorporate new siding and a new bedroom/bathroom. There is a second and third floor which both have a bedroom and a bathroom. The 30-foot tower also has an observation deck complete with LED lighting to illuminate the night and landscape surrounding the deck.

There is a private staircase that goes down 60-feet and leads to a limited-access beach north of Refugio State Beach.

Williams says the renovation was one of the most difficult projects he has ever worked on.

“The goal was to modernize the house but provide a much higher level of quality and integrity to the construction,” he told TODAY. “It was really important to the owner and ourselves that we preserve the integrity of the design. We wanted to enhance it, but we took almost a purist approach.”

Girl saves orange seahorse she thought was a “cheeto,” then it turns yellow when it’s healthy

A little girl was walking on a beach in Florida and saw something that caught her attention. She saw what looked to her like a “Hot Cheeto” – you know, those cheesy and spicy chips. So, being a good citizen, she picked it up, with the intention of throwing it into the garbage.

However, upon closer look at the “Hot Cheeto,” she realized that it wasn’t a “Hot Cheeto” at all, it was a seahorse!

The seahorse had actually been dropped by a seagull into the sand, and it was by pure luck that the little girl found her at the right time. Had she come any later, the seahorse would have passed away.

She saw that this seahorse needed help, so she put the seahorse in her bucket that she had filled with water and showed it to her mom.

Her mom knew the right thing to do would be to call experts on marine life, so she called the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The put the seahorse into an aquarium, where they could evaluate it properly.

They determined that the seahorse was a female lined seahorse, the kind of seahorse that changes colors to match its surroundings.

The aquarium staff reasoned that the seahorse must have been orange from living in red and orange sponges prior to being found. They nursed the seahorse back to health, and a week later, she started eating again. She even changed her color to yellow.

The aquarium staff continued to take care of the seahorse until she was ready to be released into the wild. When the rescuers tried to release her, she didn’t look like she was ready to leave. But eventually, she swam back into the ocean, healthy and strong!

How a normal day looks from Mom’s and kid’s perspectives

For parenting, the days are long and the years are short.

It’s a common phrase we often hear, and it’s just so true. As a parent, raising our kids can be arduous and stressful at times. Our children may test our patience in ways we never thought possible. But as they age and grow older, we soon realize how little time we had with them.

Recently, vlogger Esther Anderson, also known on YouTube as Story of This Life, created a video titled “A Normal Day.” It’s a touching video that explores a mother’s long day with her two young children, but you get to see the day from both the mother’s perspective and the daughter’s perspective.

While you can expect what Mom sees (as any parent can relate), you’ll be touched by what happens when you look at the day through her child’s eyes.

This video is truly special, and it’s worth watching.

Each student painted a rock for school art project to form beautiful path with powerful message

It is rare when both the end product and the process of creating a work of art have such a powerful message. This elementary school art project is one of those rare cases.

Sharon Elementary School in Indiana organized a school-wide art project, inspired by Only One You, where each student painted a rock in their own style. The rocks were put together to form a path in front of the school entrance. The school’s art teacher, Jessica Moyes, thought of the project. She really took the initiative and applied for a grant – luckily, she received the grant and was able to put the wheels in motion to complete the project.

Only One You is a book for children – the main character is a fish, Adri, who swims through the ocean on his own. His parents share with him some of life’s most important lessons, hoping they will help him as he moves on in his life:

“Find your own way. You don’t have to follow the crowd”

“Always be on the lookout for a new friend”

“There’s only one you in this great big world. Make it a better place”

The last quote was the primary inspiration for the project, although Ms. Moyes did read the book to all of her students. She has ~740 students in total — enough so that if each student were to paint one rock, they would have enough to form a beautiful pathway outside of their school entrance.

Ms. Moyes shared photos of the kids painting the rocks and the final product, and they have incredibly well received by the community. Teachers, parents, and normal community members praise the project, and are encouraging other schools to follow her lead and complete similar projects.

We admire the message that Ms. Moyes was trying to communicate to her students and to the community by completing this project. At a critical period in these kids’ lives, Ms. Moyes showed these kids that they are all unique, and that is the way it should be. Mom’s expensive glasses got scratched. Then she learned 10 nifty ways to remove them

Just one careless move —tossing them into your purse or onto your car’s dashboard— can scuff up your beautiful pair of glasses or those sweet designer shades. If you’re not ready to part with that pair and don’t want to spend funds on replacing the lenses, there is something you can do to salvage them.

Here are some DIY tricks to remove scratches from glass and sunglasses.

But before you have at it make sure wear gloves and read the manufacturers instructions before using any of these remedies. You may even want to try them out on a spare set of lenses first. Also, never use any abrasive solutions or cloth on your lenses.

Toothpaste

Gently rub some toothpaste on your lens with a cotton or soft wool cloth in a circular motion for about 10 seconds. Rinse with cold water and wipe your lens dry. Repeat for stubborn scratches or until the scratch is removed. This may take a while if you have an anti-scratch coating.

Baking Soda

Make a paste from some baking soda and water. Put some of the paste on your lens and rub it with a cotton or wool cloth in a circular motion. Rinse it off with cold water and wipe it dry. You may have to repeat to fully remove the scratch.

Armor Etch

There is a product called Armor Etch, which is a glass etching compound, that could be used to resurface your plastic lenses and remove scratches. NEVER USE THIS REMEDY ON GLASS LENSES, plastic only! Paint a thick coating of Armor Etch onto each side of the lenses and let it sit for five minutes, then rinse and wipe dry. Make sure you don’t rub the compound into the lenses. Armor Etch will get rid of the outer coating and the scratches that were on it.

Car Wax

You can also use car wax to get scratches out by applying some to your lens with a soft clean cloth and gently buffing the scratch away.

Windshield Water Repellent

Apply some windshield water repellent with a cloth and gently rub it in for a few seconds. This works best on superficial marks and will also help to repel dirt, moisture, and will prevent your glasses from fogging up.

Brass/Silver Polish

This is another method you should NEVER use on glass. It will, however, work on plastic lenses. Use a cotton ball to wipe the metal polish on and buff out scratches. Use a cloth to remove excess polish.

Petroleum Jelly

Place a thin coat of petroleum jelly to your lens and use a cloth to polish it in circular motions for 10 seconds. You can repeat if you need to. Use some water and a fresh cloth to remove the excess jelly.

Furniture Spray

Spray your eyeglass lenses lightly with furniture spray, like lemon Pledge. Use a lint-free cloth to rub the lens in a circular motion until your scratch goes away. The only problem with this method is that you may have to repeat the process every few days.

 

Cigarette Ash

Sprinkle some cigarette ash (make sure it’s cooled and not fresh off of a cigarette) only your lens and rub it in gently. Wash off your ash and repeat if necessary.

Liquid Bandage

Apply some liquid bandage to the lens and let it dry. Use a polishing cloth to take up any excess liquid.
