Most days, woman with Alzheimer’s forgets him. But she always remembers her son when they sing

For anyone who has had experience with it firsthand, Alzheimer’s is an unusually cruel disease. It is a degenerative disorder which is one of the leading causes of dementia, with a wide range of symptoms including short-term memory loss, declining motivation, disorientation, trouble speaking and trouble recognizing loved ones.
While there is no cure for it as of yet, there’s also no telling which memories will go or in what order—more specifically, musical ties to memory seem to be harder to break than other ones. With that in mind, we bring you this beautiful video between a son and his mother.

The video was posted on YouTube by Brian Ridings and features he and his 88-year-old mother singing guitar duets together. Though his mom lives in an assisted living home and sometimes has difficulty communicating or remembering exactly what’s going on, Ridings noticed that her eyes always lit back up again when they sang or performed music together. With that in mind, he decided to capture it on video for posterity.

Though the story is touching enough on its own, it doesn’t hurt that both of them have beautiful voices that harmonize together perfectly. Though his mom stumbles over a few words here and there, her son helps reorient her with his own singing and a smiling face. As he wrote in the video’s description: “Most days I miss [my mom], but she always comes back to me when we sing.”

This story tugs at the heartstrings for a number of reasons. For one, the relationship these two have is as warm and friendly as anyone could hope to have with their parents in old age. For another, it’s a testament to the power of music to bring us together and keep the life of the mind active and alive. On a more bittersweet note, the video is a reminder to cherish the precious time we have with our parents and loved ones while we can.

Family is trapped after floodwater flips truck, then a group of strangers comes to their rescue

The Texas floodwaters began to take over the roadways, leaving cars submerged and families stranded. The tornadoes that were pummeling the region claimed more than 14 lives in May of this year and threatened to take more had it not been for the work of a few Good Samaritans.
Tom Mitchell of Myrtle Springs, Texas, saw an overturned pickup truck in a flooded street near his home, and immediately went to help. When he came to the truck, he noticed that a family was still trapped inside.

Unable to personally pry the doors open against the rushing flood waters, he called to other bystanders to help crack the windows. Tom began filming the rescue on his cellphone.
Witnesses helped save the father, toddler, and infant that were trapped in the overturned vehicle, but when they went to grab the infant they noticed that she wasn’t breathing. With time running out, Tom decided to put the phone away and begin CPR.

“This baby is gonna die if we don’t start CPR fast,” Tom told WFAA. “Having a negative feeling coming over me. This baby may not make it, this baby may not make it. No reaction, nothing is happening.”
A woman who was looking over Tom’s shoulder began praying for the baby, and in that moment Tom says he could feel a bit of life return to the baby.
“Dear Jesus, please let this baby breathe,” she prayed. “Dear Jesus, please let this baby breathe.”

“Well the first prayer she said, I felt a response in that child,” Tom said.

Once the infant was beginning to breathe on her own, they quickly turned their attention to the toddler, who was also struggling to breathe. They were able to revive him as well, making two incredible saves in just a matter of minutes.
“I think it shows how the community and strangers all come together,” Tom said when asked why he felt compelled to share his story.

The rescued family told WFAA that their two children are now on the mend, thanks in large part to the Good Samaritans who stopped in the rushing floodwaters to make the rescue.

Mom doesn’t know Air Force son’s standing behind her, sprints into his arms when she sees him

In addition to risking their lives, the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces make lots of sacrifices. One of the biggest, if the not biggest, sacrifices they make is spending long bouts of time away from their family and friends.
It’s a sacrifice that their families must shoulder as well. So when they finally do reunite, it’s an emotional and moving reunion.
Airman Eman Govea hadn’t seen his family in six months while he was attending Air Force BMT and SF Technical School. So, he decided he wanted to surprise them when he finally came back home for a visit.

He snuck up on the side of his house while his father got his mother to come to the door while covering her eyes. Govea stretched his arms out wide to get ready for his mom’s embrace.
When his dad tells his mother to turn around, she was shocked then began to scream wildly and ran to her son.

All that worry about his safety and well-being melted away and was replaced with the reassurance that she didn’t have to miss him anymore.
