Why You Shouldn’t Install iOS 8.1.2 Right Now

The iOS 8.1.2 update is the most current version of iOS 8 update available to owners of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. As such, we continue to get questions about whether it’s worth installing. Today, we want to answer those questions with a look at why the iOS 8.1.2 update, for some people, isn’t worth installing right now.

Apple’s new iOS 8 update delivered a number of new features, enhancements and fixes to owners of compatible iPhones and iPads. The company’s brand new operating system also brought a number of iOS 8 problems along with it. iOS 8 problems have been a headache for select iPhone and iPad users since day one and despite Apple’s best efforts, they continue to plague iPhone users.

For months, Apple’s sought to eradicate these iOS 8 problems with a series of iOS 8 updates. First it pushed out iOS 8.0.1. A day later, the company issued iOS 8.0.2 as a mea culpa for the Touch ID and cellular data issues that iOS 8.0.1 brought to iOS 8 users. Days later, the company rolled out the massive iOS 8.1 bug fixer that brought Apple Pay and a series of enhancements a long with it. Soon after that, Apple deployed iOS 8.1.1.

Then, just about a week ago, we finally got to where we are now, iOS 8.1.2. iOS 8.1.2 is an extremely small update, about 20MB for most devices. Its change log lists a fix for a ringtone issue. It’s not big in size but small iOS updates often have a major impact on the performance of iPhones and iPads. That makes iOS 8.1.2 a major update in our eyes and the eyes of many others, particularly those dealing with iOS 8 problems.

We continue to get bombarded with questions about Apple’s iOS 8.1.2 update and the most popular question revolves around whether or not it’s worth a download. We’ve taken a deep dive into the iOS 8.1.2 update and today, we want to offer a few reasons why you might want to think about prolonging your move to Apple’s new upgrade.

(Note: We’ve also outlined some reasons why you might want to install the iOS 8.1.2 update right now.)

If You Own an iPhone 5

We’ve spent a lot of time with the iPhone 5’s iOS 8.1.2 update. And while we think it’s a little bit of an improvement over the iOS 8.1.1 and iOS 8.1 updates, it’s still not on par with iOS 7’s performance. We’ve spoken to several other iPhone 5 users who are having similar issues. We’ve also gotten feedback from iPhone 5 users dealing with other issues.

Right now, the iOS 8.1.2 iPhone 5 update is a hard update to recommend. Those of you who are on an older version of iOS 8 will only want to move up to the new iOS 8.1.2 update if you’re experiencing problems. Those of you who are still on iOS 7 having a fine time will probably want to wait for Apple’s iOS 8.1.3 or iOs 8.2 updates to emerge.

We’d stick in a holding pattern for now and see where the performance is at after iOS 8.1.3 and or iOS 8.2. There’s just too much risk at this point. The last thing you want is an aging device, and one that you perhaps need to hold onto right now, to start presenting problems.

If You Own an iPhone 4s

If you own an iPhone 4s and you’re just finding out about the iOS 8.1.2 update for the first time, we recommend passing on it. At least for now. While reviews for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 5s have been good, reviews of the iOS 8.1.2 iPhone 4s update have been mixed. And it’s those mixed bags that you always want to watch out for. They could go either way.

Our advice is to hold out until you’ve gathered enough feedback to make an informed decision. Most of you will probably be better off waiting for iOS 8.1.3 or iOS 8.2 to arrive before moving up from iOS 7 or another version of iOS 8. You do not want to get stuck on a buggy, low performance update and you’ll want to wait until the consensus says that the update is a stable enough to install. That could happen later today, it could happen months from now. Be patient.

If You’re Jailbroken on iOS 8 & Don’t Have Problems

If you’re already jailbroken running iOS 8 and you’re not running into any problems, there is really no need, at least at this point, to break that jailbreak and move up to iOS 8.1.2. That’s going to be a time consuming process and it’s one that may not be worth it to those of you getting good mileage out of iOS 8.1.1 or lower.

If You’re Coming from iOS 7 and You’re Unprepared

If you are currently running iOS 7 on the iPhone 5s or any other iOS 7 compatible device and you have done zero preparation for the iOS 8 update, you should not install the update right now.

If you’re on iOS 7 right now, and you decide to install iOS 8, you’re going to move right to iOS 8.1.2. That’s a huge move for a number of reasons. One, the transition from iOS 7 to iOS 8 is immense. It may not look like it when you first get the software on board, they both look the same, but there some huge changes on board iOS 8 that you need to be aware of.

There’s also a potential for something to go wrong during the installation process and there is also a chance that you run into some of the isolated iOS 8.1.2 issues that we’ve come across in recent days. You’re going to need to be prepared for this update and fortunately, we have you covered.

We’ve put together a list of steps to take before installing the iOS 8 update. These are applicable if you’re coming from iOS 8.1.1 or if you’re coming from iOS 7.1.2. You don’t have to follow all of the steps but we recommend absorbing those details before making the jump.

This is not going to be an easy transition for many of you but the more prepared you are, the better off you’re going to be. Please do not install iOS 8 and iOS 8.1.2 today if you have not done your homework.
