How to Make Your Own Chalk Paint

Chalk paint is named because of its matte, chalk-like appearance when dry. It gives you a nice matte finish and makes distressing a piece of cake. It's fast drying to a velvet effect, super easy to use, and doesn’t require you to sand first. But also really easy to make at home!

Chalk paint supplies

  • Pοwder plaster (of Paris)
  • Latex paint (water-based)
  • Water
  • Spoon
  • Mixing container
Measure your ingredients to make the right consistency. For every three parts of paint, you need one part of the water-plaster mixture.
For example: for a cup of paint you need 1/3 cup water and 3 spoons of plaster.
Add the plaster into the water and stir it using the spoon. Keep stirring until the mixture is smooth.

Pour the mixture in the paint and stir thoroughly.
If you think your paint is too thick, just add some more water. If, on the other hand, it becomes too dilute and runny, add some more plaster powder.

Pour the mixture in the paint and stir thoroughly

Now you can paint on just about any surface. Renovate an old piece of furniture or refresh a decorative piece.

You can leave your masterpiece the way it is, or go even further. Because chalk paint leaves a matte finish, it's recommended that you apply a soft wax after the paint is dry. The wax brings out the color of the paint and takes away some of the dullness that the chalk paint leaves. After you add your wax, you can distress your furniture for your desired result.
Have you ever used chalk paint? Have you ever used it on a different surface, other than wood? You can share your ideas and links to your creations in the comment section below.
