In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to manipulate a photo in order to create a silhouette effect in the sun.
You’ll need:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Girl picture
Step 1
Open the girl picture in Photoshop.
Duplicate the current layer by pressing Ctrl+J, go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and use the following values.
Change the layer blending mode to Pin Light.
Duplicate the current layer, go to Image > Adjustments > Color Balance and use the settings shown below.
Step 2
Now, there’s too much yellow in the picture, so we’ll replace it with another color. Duplicate the current layer, go to Image > Adjustments > Replace Color and use the following settings.
We’ll again replace the color to get the desired result. Go to Image > Adjustments > Replace Color and use the following settings.
Now, there’s a lot of blue so to remove that, go to Image > Adjustments > Replace Color and use the following settings.
Keep changing the color using the aforementioned steps to get a result like this:
Step 3
We’ll now make the girl more visible. Duplicate the original layer, place it above all the other layers and select Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.
Now, select Image > Adjustments > Invert.
Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels and use the settings shown below to make the image darker.
Let’s create more contrast by going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and using the values shown below.
We’ll now increase the effect by going to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and using the values shown below.
Change the layer blending mode to Soft Light.
Step 4
Duplicate the current layer (which should be the one on the top).
Now, select Image > Adjustments > Invert.
Change the layer blending mode to Multiply.
Step 5
Select the Eraser Tool and with a soft brush at 30% opacity, clean almost everything on the layer except for some paths to darken the lower area and emphasize the face as shown below.
We have achieved the desired effect, but you can improve it by applying a blur on the third layer from the top (or the third duplicate layer). Just select the layer and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
And that’s it!
