Cop catches girl stealing $2 shoes, then learns she lives in empty home with no food or beds

It’s not uncommon for police encounters to change lives, and the heroes that patrol the streets every single day certainly should be commended for their bravery and service. Not only do they protect us in the line of duty, but they also form an inspiration for other people as well.
Officer Che Milton from Atlanta was just a rookie cop in his first week of work when he was called for a theft of $2 shoes in a Family Dollar store. It was a young 12-year-old girl who had stolen the shoes. Instead of immediately berating the girl, Officer Milton decided to listen to her story.

The police officer asked her why she wanted to steal these shoes, and he didn’t expect her next answer to be so heartfelt. She told him that she desperately needed the shoes to give to her five-year-old sister, who didn’t have any to wear.
That’s when Che decided to take the girl with him so that she could take him to meet her family and verify the story. The duo drove to one of the worst neighborhoods in town and the officer found himself in a very tiny home.

“I saw the conditions. There was no food in the house and the kids were there,” the officer told to CNN.
The tiny house was barely large enough to fit two people – let alone a family. The kids didn’t have any beds, but just sheets that were placed on the floor. Furthermore, the house was also completely empty: no furniture, no toys for the kids to play with and barely any food.
The little girl’s mom immediately apologized to the police officer and explained to him that her husband worked around the clock for a living, but that it wasn’t enough for basic necessities for the entire family. The mother also couldn’t go to work because daycare was too expensive.
Without hesitation, Che decided to show the kindness in his heart and immediately left the house. He went to the nearest pizza shop and purchased four large-sized pizzas with a delivery to the girl’s home. The little girl and her family were astonished to see that just a random police officer would be so kind to them and help them.

Since then, the generous and humble police officer made several more visits to the girl to bring her and her family more food, other supplies, and some support from a friend.

We couldn’t agree more with a statement posted by the Atlanta Police Department regarding Officer Milton’s actions:
“The way that Officer Milton handled this incident showed that not only is he here to enforce the law but also to go the extra mile and be a bigger part of the community he is policing.”
