As the weather gets warmer, the days get longer, and more and more grills pop up in the suburbs, the number of watermelons grows at an exponential rate. During the summer, colorful triangle-tipped watermelon slices are as common as the sun rising in the east and setting when the fireflies come out to play. It's always a shame to have to throw away the watermelon rinds, but there are a lot of tasty and healthy things you can do with them.

PELA says that the rinds of watermelons make great compost because they are mostly water and break down quickly because of this. Cutting up the rinds and throwing them on your compost pile is a quick and easy way to get supercharged fertilizer, but the real value of watermelon rinds is in the nutrients they can give you. According to Livestrong, there are a lot of health benefits to eating watermelon rinds. The hard part is figuring out the best way to cook them.

The rinds of watermelons are full of nutrients.

Healthline says that the rinds of watermelons are full of vitamins A, C, potassium, and magnesium. They also have a lot of fiber, which helps with digestion and helps keep blood sugar and cholesterol levels in check. Citrulline, which is found in high amounts in watermelon rinds, has also been shown to lower blood pressure. Country Living says that taking citrulline supplements may be good for your heart and help your blood flow.

You can eat the rind of a watermelon as is, but there are other ways to prepare it that might make it taste better. Country Living says that pickled watermelon rinds made at home are a favorite of many people in the south of the United States. These pickles taste great, are easy to make, and go well with most finger foods. They would be a great addition to your next charcuterie board. You can also juice or blend the rinds to add a hint of watermelon to your summer drinks. So remember to save those rinds this summer and put them to good use.
