In this tutorial, we will learn how to create a photo in a photo effect to give more emphasis on the main subject of the picture. Here is the effect we will be creating:
You’ll need:
- Adobe Photoshop CS6
- Boy and girl picture
Step 1
Open the picture in Photoshop and press Ctrl+J to duplicate it.
Step 2
Select the Rectangle Tool and set the Tool Mode option to Shape.
In the Fill option, choose the Solid Color option and select the color black.
For Stroke, again choose the Solid Color option and select the color white.
For now, we will keep the Stroke size at 20pt.
With these options selected, make the shape on the main subjects of the picture.
If needed, resize the Stroke. I want it to be a bit thinner, so I changed it to somewhere around 14.
Step 3
Move the shape layer between the Layer 1 and background layer.
Now, select the Layer 1, click on the small menu icon in the upper-right corner of the Layers palette and select “Create Clipping Mask”.
Step 4
Let’s add a drop shadow to the smaller photo now. Select the shape layer, click on the Layer Styles icon at the bottom of the Layers palette (the “fx” icon), select Drop Shadow and make the following changes.
Step 5
Make sure that you have selected the shape layer in the Layers palette, then go to the Edit menu and select Free Transform. Now, rotate and resize the shape to your liking.
Step 6
Let’s make the rest of the image black and white to complete the effect. Select the background layer, choose the New Adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette and select Black & White.
In the Properties panel, keep the settings of the Black & White Adjustment Layer at Auto.
And we’re done!
